Cadet Col. Keon den Hoed is NCR Cadet of the Year

Den Hoed received the award during a ceremony June 1 at the North Central Region Conference. He is now under comsideration for the CAP national Cadet of the Year award

Den Hoed, from Boyden, Iowa, is a member of Sioux Falls Composite Squadron. He joined CAP in 2018 with the intention of becoming a private pilot after attending a 2018 home school conference where South Dakota Wing had a recruiting booth. Last year, den Hoed earned his pilot's wings under CAP's Cadet Wings flight scholarship program. He plans to become a commercial pilot.

Keon is the son of Allen and Teresa den Hoed.

Commander's Emphasis Items

South Dakota Wing Commander vacancy announced: Col Rick Franz, NCR/CV West, has delivered a memorandum to Lieutenant Colonels in the wing, announcing that applications are being received from members seeking to serve as the next South Dakota Wing Commander. Col Michael Marek's three-year term ends in December. The suspense date for applications is 15 July.

Col Mary Donley NCR Conference Award: Col Donley received a Presidential Volunteer Service Award for over 45,000 hours of volunteer service. The award, led by AmeriCorps and managed in partnership with Points of Light, allows certifying organizations to recognize their most exceptional volunteers.
SD Wing Provides “Best Ever” Drone Disaster Photography to FEMA: SDWG responded to a call for aerial imaging after deadly tornados in Iowa in May. Iowa Wing requested support from the South Dakota drone (UAS) team. A FEMA official said the SDWG Wingtra results were the best UAS imagery they've ever seen from Civil Air Patrol, yielding a resolution of less than two inches per photo pixel. Congratulations to Cadet Second Lieutenant Tyson Springman (SD-058) for earning the General Billy Mitchell Award.
SDWG Supports Pierre Airshow: Close to 30 Civil Air Patrol members from across South Dakota assisted the organizers of the Let Freedom Fly International airshow in Pierre May 25-26.
CAP’s Pierre Composite Squadron and SD Wing staff assisted the air show organizers by helping with parking, traffic, and food and beverage sales. CAP also had a static display of a Pierre-based CAP Cessna 182 as well as a recruiting booth. (Read more)
Pine Ridge Mission: Members of South Dakota Wing, Civil Air Patrol, recently assisted in a multi-agency search for a Lakota teenager who has been missing for over 50 years during the MAY SAREX. (Read more)
Emergency Services Academy TODAY/TOMORROW: Last minute adjustments to plans for the June ES Academy include:
-- Aircrew training in Pierre this evening through Sunday (Registration deadline has passed)
