- CAP Supports MQ-9 Drone Visit to Ellsworth AFB. Civil Air Patrol provided essential aircrew services this month, allowing an MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aircraft to visit Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. (Read more)
- NEWG DR Flights: South Dakota Wing completed two tornado damage assessment sorties in Nebraska this week for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The flights, flown in coordination with CAP’s Nebraska and Iowa wings, traced the path of the powerful April 27 tornado from near Lincoln, past Omaha and Blair. and on toward the Northeast. FEMA will use the geo-tagged photographs to help determine building-by-building storm-related damage. (Read more)
- SAREX: East River aircrews practices ELT, Photography and other flying skills on May 11 (Read more). SDWG members also joined a West River search, but information about that training has not yet been authorized for release.
- Rushmore Composite Squadron Change of Command: CAP Lt. Lauri
Ziebarth assumed command of Rushmore Composite Squadron on May 9 in a change of
command ceremony during the squadron meeting at Ellsworth AFB. The traditional
passing of the flag ceremony was officiated by Col. Michael Marek, SD Wing

- Lookout Mountain Remembers 1994 search. Lookout Mountain Composite Squadron hosted family members of the owner of an aircraft that crashed 30 years ago. South Dakota Wing found the aircraft almost completely submerged in a stock dam after an extensive search. The family members returned to Spearfish, where the original search was based, for a memorial service and remembrance. (Read more)

- Pierre Airshow - Pierre Composite Squadron is looking for volunteers to assist with their participation in the Pierre Air Show, 25-26 May 2024. Billeting is free for CAP members. The air show will provide free tickets for lunch and water. Duties could include parking, security, assisting vendors, and recruiting CAP members. You will have time to enjoy the air show. (Register)
- Emergency Services Academy, Pierre June 7-9: This academy will have three branches (Ground Team Member 3, Aircrew, and sUAST). GTM 3 and sUAST will start from ground zero to almost signed off. Aircrew training will include MO and AP. (FEMA Uploader, 406 Beacons, G-1000 Programing, SAR Topo, Foreflight, and the CAP FM Radio). Food and lodging is available. (Register now)
- Two teams from South Dakota Wing competed in CAP’s recent North Central Region Cadet Competition at Camp Ripley in Little Falls, MN. Lincoln County Composite Squadron, Tea, and Rushmore Composite Squadron, Rapid City, represented South Dakota in the highly competitive event, which included teams from six of the seven states in CAP’s North Central Region.
